While the modern spelling of witch with the central t first appeared in the 16th century, the term dates to 13th century Old English. The verb wiccian, similar to wicken in Middle Low German, meant roughly to bewitch. The Old English word had both feminine (wicce) and masculine (wicca) forms. In the intervening centuries, the terms witch and wicca have evolved into different, yet related, meanings.
