Expert sailors, navigators, and warriors, the Vikings of the 8th to 11th centuries founded Norse settlements across Northern Europe. Over time, their travels ranged as far as Constantinople, Arabia, and Iran. Local clan chieftains would organize exploration and raiding groups that were soon feared by neighboring cultures. These teams would take to the waters in their signature longboats, conducting surgical raid strikes on towns along the European coasts. In fact the name Viking comes from “víkingr,” an early Scandinavian word for pirate.
