Skulls played an important role in the daily lives of the ancient Vikings. Researchers uncovered several instances of human skulls and bones kept beneath homes after the deceased had been buried. The famous Ribe skull, which originated from Iron Age Denmark, sported ancient runes and the names of Odin and Tyr. A hole drilled in the top suggests that it served as an amulet or ward of protection. In Norse myth, Odin carried the skull of the beheaded giant Mimir. The sky god would consult with the skull for knowledge of the dark and arcane.
