For more than 1,500 years, the 24 symbols of the Elder Futhark alphabet sat at the heart of Norse lore. Equal parts alphabet, learning tool, record keeper and prophesy, runes helped keep the Viking tales of gods and giants alive for centuries.

In Norse mythology, the maiden Norns carved the first runes based on wisdom they received from the Well of Urd. The god king Odin sacrificed himself on the world tree Yggdrasil for nine days and nights so that his eyes would open to the true meaning of the strange symbols.
